Michael Ruchim, MD

Michael A. Ruchim, MD is the Associate Chief Medical officer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Northwestern Memorial Foundation. In his role as Associate Chief Medical Officer he is integrally involved with the goals and missions of NMHC and FSM, especially as it relates to over 350 members of private faculty.  As Vice President of Medical Affairs at NMF, he oversees the Benefactor Relations program across the NM system and provides counsel on complex patient care needs. Dr. Ruchim is also a gastroenterologist actively involved in patient care, as well as medical student, resident and fellowship training.

Dr. Ruchim received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from the University of Illinois, where he also completed his residency and GI fellowship. In 1984 he joined Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he maintained a faculty appointment with the University of Illinois. During his tenure at Weiss he served as Chief of Staff and later Vice President for Academic and Medical Affairs, and ultimately became a faculty member at the University of Chicago.  He was an integral liaison between Weiss and the University of Chicago promoting clinical programs before joining NMH in 2006.

Dr. Ruchim is well known for his skills as an interventional endoscopist, especially for his work in ERCPs (a procedure for getting into the bile ducts, liver and pancreas through the mouth), as well as being one of the first in the county to publish a new non-surgical technique for treating bile duct leaks. His professional highlights include his selection as Teacher of the Year in 1987, becoming President of the Chicago Society for Gastroenterology in 1996 and his participation in the training of over 75 gastroenterology fellows and over 600 medical students and residents.
